Product Description
Kestrel Replacement Impeller
All Kestrels feature a patented user-replaceable impeller assembly.
- User replaceable
- High precision axle and low-friction Zytel® bearings
- Light weight impeller
- 25mm (1″) diameter
- Factory calibrated
- Fits all Kestrel models
- Quick and easy to replace – no tools required
The impeller assembly is sold as a replacement impeller for all models in the Kestrel hand-held instrument range. It can also be used in other flow measurement applications.
The light weight impeller is mounted on a precision axle with low-friction Zytel® bearings to provide accurate flow measurements even at low wind speeds. A magnet is mounted on the axle so the impeller’s rotation can be easily sensed.
The impeller housing is designed so no adjustment of the bearings is required and during manufacture each assembly is individually tested in a wind tunnel. This ensures that when a new impeller assembly is installed in a Kestrel instrument the accuracy of the instrument is restored to within specification.
The assembly is supplied with a retaining o-ring.
For customers requiring independent calibration certificates for their Kestrel, a new impeller would require re-calibration – please refer to our calibration services.
Replacing the Impeller
Using your thumbs press FIRMLY on the impeller module to remove the entire unit.
Press only the sides of the new impeller when installing to avoid damaging the precision hub bearing.
Insert the impeller so that the side that has a small triangle (close to the perimeter) faces the front of the Kestrel when installed.
Orient one “arm” straight up (fig.1 & fig.2).
The impeller can be pushed in from either side.
Kestrel Portable Vane Mount
The Kestrel Vane Mount is a free-spinning wind vane, with a cradle to hold a Kestrel, that will attach to any tripod and hold the Kestrel facing into the wind at all times.
The vane mount is designed to be extremely lightweight and portable, and easily assembled in seconds from its compact components. Its precision pivot and lightweight vane extension allow the unit to spin freely in even the slightest of breezes. The incorporated level ensures that the vane mount is installed correctly and that a Kestrel 4500‘s direction readings will be accurate.
Together, a Kestrel 4500 and Vane Mount weigh less than 250g and pack into a compact 7 x 19 cm case, which protects the Vane Mount pieces and Kestrel Meter.
The Kestrel vane mount is ideal for use with the Kestrel Portable Mini Tripod (sold separately), but will also fit any other standard tripod.
A Kestrel 4000 series model with vane mount and tripod provides a complete weather station, readily transported to remote locations.
The Portable Vane Mount contains four components: a zippered carry pouch, a cup bracket with incorporated level, a boom and a flight.

Kestrel Portable Mini Tripod
Clamp any Kestrel into this sturdy but lightweight tripod to take readings in the field. The tripod’s legs extend to permit a maximum height of 25cm, and a minimum of 15cm.
Ultra-compact and portable, this Kestrel tripod folds to just 19cm and weighs 140g. It comes with a padded carry pouch.
For further options, the top clamp detaches and is compatible with any tripod with a standard tripod mount. This clamp is also available separately.
The clamp may be replaced with the Kestrel Portable Vane Mount (sold separately) for a small, lightweight, portable weather station (limited to 15mph or less).

Kestrel PC Interface
With the Kestrel Computer Interface and Communicator software, the data stored on any of the Kestrel 4000 series pocket weather trackers may be uploaded to a PC. This enables long-term storage of the data, further analysis and detailed charting.
- Upload weather data to a PC from any Kestrel 4000 series instrument
- Log environmental conditions continuously to a PC in real-time
The Interface kit comprises a cradle to hold the Kestrel, a cable to connect to a USB port on the computer and the necessary software on a CD.
Should a RS232 9-pin serial connector be required to suit a serial port on a computer (instead of USB), a suitable cable is also available. Please ask for this option when you are ordering your Kestrel Interface.
Simply connect the interface cable to the appropriate port on your PC, rest the Kestrel on the cradle, and the Kestrel Communicator automatically recognises which model the Kestrel 4000 series meter you are using, and uploads the data accordingly.
The Kestrel Communicator Software is extremely easy-to-use, and allows users to review, analyse and store their data easily and efficiently.
Download Stored Data
Keep an electronic log of your data with the Kestrel Interface. With the Interface and software, data can be quickly and easily downloaded for analysis. With the Communicator software, the Kestrel’s data can easily be charted and also exported for long-term storage or use in other applications.
Chart Stored Data
Chart entire data logs or custom selections easily, and automatically chart the data with the press of a button.
Clear Data and Set the Date and Time
The Interface also allows users to clear the Kestrel’s memory banks, and synchronize your computer’s date and time with your Kestrel Meter’s.
The Kestrel PC Interface Comprises:
- Cradle : The Kestrel sits inside the cradle and communicates optically.
- USB cable : This plugs into the cradle at one end and any available USB port in your PC at the other end.
- CD -ROM : The Communicator software extracts the data from the Kestrel and places it in a comma-delimited text file.
- Optional RS232 serial cable : This plugs into the cradle at one end and a serial port in your PC at the other end. (Not supplied as standard)

Kestrel Relative Humidity Calibration Kit
For re-calibration of a Kestrel’s humidity measurement in the field, the Kestrel RH calibration kit is available.
The kit includes two salt solutions, two salt bath jars with plastic suspension grids, one water jar to stabilise the temperature and an insulated calibration case.
Every kestrel meter with a humidity sensor features an easy-to-run self-calibration routine for use with this kit.
Calibration services:
For customers requiring independent calibration of their Kestrel, we offer third-party calibration of the humidity sensor. Please refer to calibration services for more information.
Kestrel NiteIze Carry Case
The Kestrel 4000 range features a flip-top impeller cover that protects the only moving part of the instrument – the impeller. The instrument also comes with a soft carry pouch, which protects the display from scratches and the unit from dirt.
For maximum protection, we offer an optional sturdy padded nylon carry case that makes it easier to carry the unit on a belt or pack. This NiteIze case has a special window, designed to expose the temperature and humidity sensors to the outside air, allowing the Kestrel 4000 range instrument to continue logging accurate readings.
The NiteIze case holds your Kestrel snugly while the patented NiteIze clip on the back is a nylon/fibreglass composite that accommodates up to a 57mm belt, and also attaches reliably over a waistband. The case also includes a strong hook and loop strap to allow for easy mounting on a backpack or harness strap.
Other handy features include an elastic loop on the outside for carrying a small torch or other tool, an elastic battery loop on the inside holds up to two space AAA batteries and an additional internal pocket.
The NiteIze carry case is available in black only.
Although designed for the Kestrel 4000 series instruments, other Kestrels will fit happily in this case too.
