Q: Will the Sporter Chrono work with thicker barrel (i.e. greater than 1″ diameter)?
A: The manufacturer recommends the  V3 model for thicker barrels. But, wink-wink, if you have a 1.25″ barrel you can get this to work, based on what we’ve seen. If you need to go really fat (up to 2.0″ diameter), get the V3. Magnetospeed also says the V3 is needed for airguns, shotguns, and muzzleloaders.

Kit includes:

  • Display Unit
  • Bayonet-style sensor (Bayo)
  • Thick and thin rubber V-block spacers
  • Heavy duty strap with thumb nut tightener
  • Ultra-compact storage container.

I took a friend to shoot some steel at a reservoir and chrono’d different factory loads for him and a mix of homeloads and factory loads for me.

The chronograph is so easy to fit. His Steyr Mannlicher has a very thin barley twist sporter barrel which required the larger spacer and my Rem 700 VS with a circa 0.85” thick barrel needed the smaller spacer as it did not register shots with the larger spacer.

Scrolling through the data is simple thanks to a one button menu function, as is deleting the shot/s. Plenty of information including SD, ES, High, Low Average. I just wrote them down after I had finished the string and before I moved onto different rifle/ammo.

If you only wanted to fire one string of up to 12 shots then you can turn it off, take it home, turn it back on and the data will still be stored.

The length of the cable between the sensor and screen is plenty long enough to see the speed after each shot whilst in prone position or shooting off a table/bench.

The best thing about the product is that, as long as it is set up correctly, you cannot shoot it! Very simple to use. No fussy placement like with the Alpha/Beta chrony. Best of all it is not light sensitive.

The only negative for me is that it shifted POI 4 inches up! (This is really not an issue for load development though).

In short, if you homeload and only need to use a chronograph to check the speed and consistency it will more than satisfy your requirements whilst being so easy to use.
